It seems the only difference is that an EREV’s engine has no physical connection to the wheels, unlike a traditional PHEV.

Seems like a good idea to me. It’s how marine propulsion works.

What is the difference between an EREV and a PHEV?

Like a waste treatment plant probably doesn’t create many jobs either. Or a highway. Or most other infrastructure.

I guess I don’t see why using electricity for AI is inherently less virtuous than using it for random small businesses in a “local economy”.
November 4, 2025 at 9:05 PM
Local economy?
November 4, 2025 at 7:53 PM
There is a slight difference between an AI datacenter and a crack factory.

Because new industry is good for the long term prosperity of the economy
November 4, 2025 at 5:41 PM
Long term I think solar will win, they just wanted the data centers RIGHT NOW and a gas turbine on a truck was the only option that existed.
November 4, 2025 at 4:57 PM
Yeah that’s certainly unfortunate
November 4, 2025 at 4:55 PM
Yeah, I think it will turn out fine as the hyperscalers seem willing to pay for off grid capacity.

Communist have very successful industrial policy and we should emulate their strategy.
November 4, 2025 at 4:46 PM
It was a great success in that aspect, and quite remarkable that the price of electricity costs remained low that whole time, but it’s also bad that as a knock on consequence, it’s politically impossible to have any new power intensive industry in the country.
November 4, 2025 at 4:45 PM
This seems like the wrong incentive structure if we want to encourage new industry and new power production.
November 4, 2025 at 4:18 PM
“Where every uptick in demand triggers costly new infrastructure”

Meanwhile in reality, no new net production has been added for almost 20 years. Hopefully these data centers finally break the cycle.

It insists upon itself

And they don’t even make the chips. TSMC does.
November 3, 2025 at 2:35 PM
Yeah everything has just been iterative

Fun fact is that life expectancy increased over this time period
