Marine radiochemist- the biological carbon pump, pie and coffee make life good
Everyone got pretty excited when Gavin Newsom showed up at the #Ocean Pavilion at #COP30 today. At least one US politician who cares about #climate issues. l to r, SIO Director, Meenakshi Wadhwa, Newsom, WHOI Director Peter de Menocal and Kilaparti Ramakrishna also from #WHOI 🌊🧪

Here at the #ocean pavilion at #COP30, we are facing the challenges of no electricity to show slides, or AC, so improvising with our laptops to tell the story of ocean climate solutions and the studies needed to understand whether or not marine carbon dioxide removal #mCDR makes sense.

Its not every day you wake up and are asked about #radioactive shrimp!
I guess Marco Werman at #PRX's the World wanted the down low from this #WHOI marine radiochemist. Listen here to the story.

Rather than repeating crazy headlines, everyone should read the paper, which suggests ocean iron fertilization could remove 200 Gt of atmospheric CO2, with only a 3% reduction in ocean oxygen. Let’s not be hasty in deciding which solutions are best until we have more research on all mCDR approaches🌊

These posts about why ocean iron is so ineffective, ignore nature’s large scale response to changing iron inputs – wildfires in Australia were just one example (Tang et al., 2021, doi.org/10.1038/s415...) which led to 100’s million tons of additional C export 🌊

Spring rhubarb is here so time to make the first #pie of the season on Mother’s Day.

Thank you #AGU for your response to this chaotic, illegal and unconstitution breakdown of #science and the rest of this democracy coming from this administration.

Glad to see #AGU standing up for science! and protesting the US pull out of the Paris Agreement, IPCC, and massive cuts to #NOAA and #NSF. Stand up for #science. Be visible. Be active. Be aware. Thank those who are fighting back.

Stand strong against illegal and unconstitutional Executive Orders! #NSF amended their suspension of funding. NSF now states “Consistent with the district court's order, NSF awardees may continue activities consistent with the current terms and conditions of their NSF awards at this time.”🧪🌊

Ken Buesseler here from Café Thorium, which is not really a café although we have been known to serve espresso & latte throughout the worlds major ocean basins. In fact, we are a serious scientific research team at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. cafethorium.whoi.edu

Wonder what the Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee considers questionable projects being funded at NSF. This word cloud is from the last 71 Environmental Justice words from a list of more than 2000 in their report. I think you will recognize why so many scientists are concerned.
