While T and I love going to the theater together, this is one of our biggest artistic differences! I crave plot and some sort of structure, even if creative. If the plot is too straightforward he's a little bored. Absurdism is his jam, particularly if it's politically subversive...

My secret joy is that we bought the rain barrel from Blue Stem Natives (fantastic native plant place), and it's made here in NE, and they use upcycled food grade containers. I specifically chose ours because of this, the only one like this, which makes me laugh each time:
Kedem in English and in Hebrew

(Sorry, I forgot alt text - it's rain flowing from the spout into our bright blue barrel)

Everything is depressing so instead I'll talk about rain- we've had a couple of years of drought in NE and so as we've started to fill our little urban plot with native plants we wanted help watering- thus our new rain barrel. Which brings me such joy! Plus my secret joy abt the barrel:

It was a super interesting conversation from a fascinating book - listen to Gastropod and then go read the whole thing!

I recently spoke to a writer (doesn't cover science) who insisted that something was settled science in humans based on one mouse study - it wasn't appropriate timing, but I wish I could have sent them to TON! The tool below can help any & all journalists incorporate science & understand why/how!

Every Story is a Science Story. That’s why, with @rjionline.bsky.social, TON has been hard at work developing a free tool to make it easier for journalists on any beat to strengthen their stories by incorporating science. And today, that tool - the Science Reporting Navigator - is live! 🧪
Introducing the Science Reporting Navigator - The Open Notebook
The Science Reporting Navigator stands ready to walk you through complex reporting scenarios to integrate science into any beat. The Open Notebook and the Reynolds Journalism Institute are thrilled to...

The news gets more and more alarming, but thanks to our governor (and all the wonderful scientists and public health officials and policy makers) my spouse and I just walked around the corner to CVS, without an appointment, and got our covid and flu vaccines today.

I'm going to tag my cousin @mgraber1.bsky.social who is a literal international expert/scholar in constitutional law. Mark, @kendrawrites.com is a brilliant journalist - can you help her out?

I just typed to some friends 'the depth of the delusion is so demoralizing and depressing.' Alliteration unintended, but I think that's my general state of being.

I'm just going to put this out in the universe - I'm mentoring a truly delightful 1st gen college-bound senior who's had some tough times but is super smart with limitless passion and curiosity. Her *dream* school is Northeastern. Do I know anyone who knows anyone in admissions she can talk to?

Sorry you've gotten such shit.

You are going to truly enjoy our episode airing on September 9

The *deep* sense of community. I know so many people in the stores, my gym, our fav restaurants. (In Somerville/Boston! It's true!) I can get nearly anywhere on my bike. Walking everywhere. The fact that it doesn't matter how not-normie you might think you are, you're not. Nobody looks at you funny.

I don't know when all those birthdays occur but it'd be so nice to spread it out and taste the different seasons!

I literally had it on my calendar as a reminder for when the bookings opened for the date I wanted, and we happened to be in a cab to the airport at 6am and I got on my phone and was like, "SCORE"

The meal I ate there in Jan for my bday was *so good*! I'd go back in a heartbeat (though alas no plans to return to nyc anytime soon). I felt bad for the woman who showed up when it opened and was like, don't you have *any* available space? Um, no. You have to book as soon as it's available.

We (in Sville) got an ebike to supplement our reg bikes for large grocery runs (or farmers market hauls w/ watermelons), or trips say to home depot, that we'd usually have to use a car for. The bike was a practical choice that could fit me & my taller spouse. We didn't expect to love it so hard!

I don't think Lucy's on here (and I miss seeing her posts on the bird site), but as a fellow child of the DC area — I'm no longer a local, though Lucy moved back — I agree with this list. Especially calling the airport "Reagan." www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/cri...

Not on instagram and haven't seen cottage cheese influencers but one of my fav 'sugary' treats of childhood was mixing sugar into cottage cheese, putting it on toast, sprinkling w cinnamon, toasting it all til it got melty. Delicious! (And not pretending to be anything other than its weird self)

Private equity is the big bad wolf tearing into, gnashing at, and shitting out - destroying, in other words - so much more than most people realize.
cagraber.bsky.social
There are so many depressing things to read about today on the great wide internet, but this - that private equity will potentially have significantly yet *more* money and power - might just be one of the most depressing of all.
cagraber.bsky.social
It's an odd reaction, but Billy Bragg's "There is power in a union" literally always makes me cry. (Yes, it's on right now.)
cagraber.bsky.social
Yeah the 2nd is common I guess but doesn't capture it all - not just that they kind of fetishize us, but that they want certain political things to be true so that we'll eventually die. I'd say all theology is kinda weird-it is-but this one has such extreme political implications...
