“Even if you are not an activist — your positive words can strengthen someone’s patience in prison.”

Waleed Abu al-Khair reminds us: You don’t need to be a lawyer or a campaigner to support human rights.

Your words matter. Use them to demand his release.

An image of Waleed behind bars holding up a peace sign. Above the image, text reads: "Waleed has endured over a decade of arbitrary detention for his peaceful human rights work, and is still facing harsh conditions including solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, and inadequate medical care."
A bold red banner with yellow text reads "ARTICLE 11 DECLARATION ON HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS". The banner is bordered top and bottom with barbed wire, all set against a bright yellow background. Text against a solid yellow background reads: "Everyone has the right, individually and in association with others, to the lawful exercise of his or her occupation or profession. Everyone who, as a result of his or her profession, can affect the human dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms of others should respect those rights and freedoms and comply with relevant national and international standards of occupational and professional conduct or ethics."
A vibrant red banner with yellow text reads "JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED." The banner is framed by strands of barbed wire above and below. Below the banner, against a yellow background, dark blue text states, "Join the fight against arbitrary detainment." At the very bottom, in smaller dark blue text, it says, "For more information, visit https://alqst.org/en".

Waleed’s detention is a direct violation of his right to peacefully express his views and defend human rights. His case highlights the harsh realities faced by many human rights defenders who are targeted for their advocacy.

For many HRDs, the cost of standing up for justice is often their freedom.

Waleed Abu al-Khair, a courageous human rights lawyer, has been arbitrarily detained and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He was imprisoned for defending activists, advocating for reforms, and speaking out against human rights violations in Saudi Arabia.

In his last interview prior to his arrest, Waleed is aware that his detainment is imminent–a harrowing reminder to us all that freedom is often fragile for human rights defenders, and justice delayed is justice denied.

Do you want to help us campaign for the release of Waleed Abu al-Khair?
