And that is where we left off.

When they turned at the sound, they found themselves face-to-face with an elderly dwarf man. He looked at them and told them that he'd heard that they had been doing a lot of research on him, confirming that it was definitely Bristlebelt standing there.
January 31, 2026 at 4:37 AM
The group spent hours poring through the books. After a while, they heard someone clearing their throat off to the side.
January 31, 2026 at 4:37 AM
While flipping through his books, they noticed two names that were repeated numerous times. The names Saelihn Qimys and Klang Nas were both brought up repeatedly in his dedications and in his bibliography.
January 31, 2026 at 4:31 AM
Issac and Nova immediately went into full science bros mode discussing the various implications of his books and the questions being asked in them.
January 31, 2026 at 4:17 AM
He'd written a book that focused entirely on the question of "where does magic originate from?"
January 31, 2026 at 4:16 AM
He'd written a book about the history of attempts to break down healing magic in a way that could be used by wizards.
January 31, 2026 at 4:16 AM
He'd written several books about how mages should be more tolerant of the natural magics, as there was much from it, which was a bit surprising.
January 31, 2026 at 4:15 AM
He'd won some awards for his research. The past two centuries, he'd been focused mainly on studying where magic came from, how it flowed through the world, and how it could be harnessed.

That immediately got the group's attention.
January 31, 2026 at 4:14 AM
He had been married twice, both to humans who since passed away. He didn't have any biological children but considered his students to be like children to him.
January 31, 2026 at 4:14 AM
They were able to piece together that Bristlebelt had been teaching at Rastone Academy for over 300 years. Prior to that, he was an inventor, a scholar, and for a short time an adventurer.
January 31, 2026 at 4:13 AM
Issac went back to the automaton that he'd spoke with earlier and asked it if Professor Bristlebelt had written any books that were available in the library. It told him what aisle to find his articles and books in.
January 31, 2026 at 4:07 AM
They decided that they really wanted to get to the private library that required faculty approval, and their best bet was probably Professor Bristlebelt.
January 31, 2026 at 4:03 AM
That led to a very high concept conversation about just what the fuck was going on. They were even more concerned about just what was going on after finding that book.
January 31, 2026 at 4:00 AM
He got a sudden sense of danger, and he made sure to tell everyone what he'd remembered mentally instead of out loud.
January 31, 2026 at 3:47 AM
Nova thought for a minute about the ancient gods, the ones before the old gods, and he remembered something that he read on an ancient scroll once. Lotia. It was a Sylvan word that meant "the founder of creation."
January 31, 2026 at 3:47 AM
Issac looked at the book and was able to figure out that the word that had been removed was somewhere between four and six letters long.

Kes also looked at it, even though they couldn't read it, and while they couldn't tell just when the word had been removed they could tell it had been a while.
January 31, 2026 at 3:39 AM
It seemed to be references to them breaking bread in someone's honor, and it was the name of whoever that person or god was that had been removed.
January 31, 2026 at 3:21 AM
Nova found a book about the elves and dwarves coming together for the first time. While flipping through it, he quickly noticed that there were some places where words had been physically cut out of books. The holes seemed to be the same size, which made him think it was probably the same word.
January 31, 2026 at 3:20 AM
For the time being, he did some more general research using the information that was available.
January 31, 2026 at 3:15 AM
Nova wandered the library a bit, trying to find the oldest text he could. He quickly found out that they were locked away and required permission from a professor to access.
January 31, 2026 at 3:09 AM
Once he realized that the automaton could talk, he spent even more time interrogating it about its history and creator.
January 31, 2026 at 3:01 AM
Issac spent several minutes just staring at the automaton, which was very impressive and much more complicated than anything he had created so far.
January 31, 2026 at 2:57 AM
There was an automaton of some type in the stacks putting away books.
