the birthright clause was not just written to wipe dred scott off of the books, it was written to repudiate the *idea* behind dred scott, you might say the larger *ideological project* of dred scott. and the whole of section 1 of the 14th amendment is a constitutional statement of political equality

A bunch of ketamine-heads saw Terminator 2 while they were high and got spooked that it might be real, and now those morons own something like 25% of the national GDP.

Isn’t “I get to block people who say shit I don’t want to listen to, even when those people are making valid points” kinda the whole point of the article though? That we shouldn’t treat social media blocking as an opposition to free speech? “You have a right to speak, I have a right to block you.”

In rural Maine you just gotta Be Cool and the stoned teenager will slip you some of the Allen’s Coffee Brandy they keep behind the counter.

That’s exactly why the USAA commercials work while the Mahomes State Farm commercials are unwatchable.

Here is one about how campus cancel culture “threatens freedom.” There is a good point about campus civility codes, but the remainder hand-wrings about informal social consequences for speech. Social consequences such as insults are protected speech too. www.washingtonexaminer.com/restoring-am...

It’s less about a lack of left voices, more about how their “anti-woke” opinion writers are regularly arguing that “cancel culture,” broadly and incoherently defined, is a restriction on free speech, when in reality counter-speech is protected speech too.

My explanation is that FIRE has both A) a litigation group that keeps its head down and does legitimate, principled litigation work in support of first amendment rights and B) a PR/Editorial group that consists largely of high-profile “anti-woke” blowhards. Two distinct branches of the organization.

Whenever I see people talking about how actually peasants had it pretty well, all I can think is “the people you’re describing are hobbits. You’re thinking about the Shire, a made-up place from a fantasy series. That’s not real life.”

I’m very aware that voter advocacy groups are actively preparing for it—that’s the point I’m making. We should expect ICE to attempt overt voter intimidation and prepare accordingly. People should be concerned about what ICE might try and get involved with community orgs instead of being doomers.

I’m an attorney who has studied election law and worked pro bono for election law hotlines. We can disagree about this without being assholes to each other.
September 19, 2025 at 2:27 PM
What are you talking about? There’s a reason I said “handful of swing districts” not “all swing districts.” The point isn’t to be everywhere, it’s to go viral and create the impression that they might be anywhere. Also it only takes six dudes with guns patrolling near a polling place to intimidate.
September 19, 2025 at 2:18 PM
“Completely rig” is exaggeration, but the idea of surging ICE agents to a handful of swing districts as an act of intimidation seems plausible.

It’s also something a gamer would say to sound “tactical” in voice chat.

But many do! I’ve had sincere, heart-to-heart conversations with conservative family members where they explained their genuine belief that welfare is actually more harmful to poor people in the long run. To say “you’re lying, you couldn’t possibly believe that” to their face is very condescending!
September 18, 2025 at 7:12 PM
In your experience, engaging with conservatives as if their beliefs are sincere and hearing them out is less condescending than saying that they are liars and abusers who only react defensively when confronted because they don’t like being called out on their lies?
September 18, 2025 at 6:52 PM
I know conservatives who sincerely, profoundly, actually believe, for example, the state providing money to poor people locks the poor into cycles of poverty and dependence, and does greater harm in the long run. Assuming that such a person is a “liar and an abuser” is condescending and dishonest.
September 18, 2025 at 6:49 PM
At no point did we suggest a lack of agency. A conservative who sincerely believes that conservative policies are beneficial for society is not a “liar and an abuser”, they are a person with policy opinions. Some conservatives want to hurt others but applying that to all of them is disingenuous.

In our brief interaction, you’ve demonstrated a profound lack of intellectual curiosity and have repeatedly put words in my mouth as if I made arguments completely unrelated to anything I said or even implied. You and I will not obtain anything fruitful from further conversation. Have a nice day.
September 18, 2025 at 6:40 PM
I don’t think you’re understanding what you’re saying or pretending to argue against. All we’re saying is that the average conservative voter has sincere beliefs. And why are you condemning “utter contempt for conservatives” when you are the one arguing that they’re all power-hungry liars?
