Despite its spooky name, the vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) isn’t a bloodsucker — it’s actually a gentle scavenger living in the dark, oxygen-poor depths of the ocean, up to 3,000 feet (900 m) below the surface. It’s called the “vampire” squid because of its dark red color, webbed arms that resemble a cloak, and glowing blue eyes — some of the largest (relative to body size) in the animal kingdom. 👁️Unlike most squid, it doesn’t hunt. Instead, it survives where few creatures can, by collecting “marine snow” — tiny bits of dead plankton and detritus drifting down from above. It gathers this food using filament-like feeding arms coated in mucus, almost like sticky fishing lines. And when threatened? It doesn’t ink — there’s no point in total darkness. Instead, it releases a glowing cloud of bioluminescent mucus to confuse predators. ✨A true survivor of evolution, the vampire squid is the only living member of its order — a “living fossil” bridging the gap between octopuses and squids, unchanged for over 30 million years.—📍 Follow @ExplainingTheOceans to uncover more deep-sea wonders.#VampireSquid #DeepSeaCreatures #MarineBiology #OceanFacts #SeaLife #DeepOcean #Science #EducationalReel #NatureIsMetal #ExplainingTheOceans
