I do think the best way to make it less completely dreary is likely grabbing a friend or looking through the achievement list to work towards that and the wanyudo! I think about Keeper of knowledge and Wings of Steel/Fire every day :c

Sadly think a lot of the links are lost but you can likely find entire groups farming essences, clusters, and fate groups by asking around or shouting the instance.

Field notes are also a thing that gives you a mount for all 50 can be traded for a lockbox if you get dupes after use.

Depending on your class you'll also be looking for different lost actions which give extremely beneficial effects in survival, damage, and more which are farmed from non magitek enemies. something of note is that a party shares drop chances so one person farming can trigger drops for everyone else.

Generally your focused on grinding mettle through skirmishes critical engagements which can be triggered by killing magitek who also drop clusters for the riding map, minion, mount etc clearing a CE perfectly will also give you the chance for a 1v1 duel with a boss

I've been running around the starlight instance for hours trying to remember who everyone is, they've crammed nearly every quest grid npc into it which makes me really happy rudy and rissai seem to also spawn as well
