I love old #newspapers. You never know what you'll find, like this 1900 appeal for a stolen rooster. According to ChatGPT, the German quote is a phonetic rendering of a dialect and expresses frustration, questioning why Mr. Kehm should continue raising #chickens only to have them stolen by others.
ROBBED AFTER ALL. THIEVES THAT VISITED CHAS. KEHM STOLE HIS PRIZE ROOSTER. It seems, after all, that the thieves which visited the property of Chas. H. Kehm, 1214 Walnut Street, on Wednesday night, who it was thought were scared off, secured some plunder. Early in July a night burglar went through the whole house, Mr. Kehm’s bedroom included, and stole all his deeds, mortgages and judgment notes, besides a finger ring and a breast pin, but that loss didn’t affect him as does the loss of the rooster. The thief is requested to return the rooster. No question will be asked. If he can cruelly keep the rooster after reading this and learning how deeply he has wronged Mr. Kehm, he is a hard-hearted, low-down thief, unworthy of his calling, and ought to go to jail. Mr. Kehm seriously contemplates giving up the chicken raising business altogether, summing up the situation by saying, “Fer vos soll ich sie don raisa fer onnera leid?” His friends don’t want to see him abandon chicken raising. Even the chicken thieves ought to force such abandonment, thereby killing the goose that lays the golden egg. (Later.) Mr. Kehm has yielded to the solicitation of his friends and will not go out of the chicken business. But he will transform his chicken yard into an arsenal, underlaid with dynamite mines and fortified with trap guns.
