Mhm! Also as a heads up, before the MGS games there was Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake. These 2 were MSX titles that are canon to the series and came out on the MSX in Japan only, until years later being officially localised and are part of the metal gear solid master collection too. :)

Oh yeah 3 story wise is done really well. One of my faves too.

Nothing really to avoid. MGS Portable Ops is half canon so if you do play that PSP title, it can add to a little knowledge. Metal gear AC!D 1 and 2 are non canon spin offs but fun to play. Metal Gear Rising Revengence is a spin off too, but very worth playing.

Nothing wrong with going in release order. So MGS1, 2 ,3 and so on. With 3 you can either play the master collection pc port version/console version or you can play the MGS3 remake called MGS Delta Snake Eater. Besides remake graphics, the story is exactly the same.
