Counts carried out this autumn on the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan border have logged more than 5,000 Sociable Lapwings – one of the largest gatherings of this Critically Endangered species recorded in recent decades:
Bumper Sociable Lapwing count offers hope for global population
More than 5,000 Critically Endangered Sociable Lapwings were counted at a major migration stop-over in Turkmenistan in autumn 2025. The record high offers rare good news for the species and highlights the importance of key staging sites.

Diving ducks have their legs positioned further back than dabbling ducks...

However this also makes them less agile on land

New Study! Goosanders were tracked using GPS tags in two Scottish river catchments. 🌊 Results showed birds ranged over significantly longer river stretches in the Forth than birds in the Tweed, with licensed shooting occurring in the latter. All birds showed greater movement during daylight hours. ☀️

Really good wildlife cruise on the Tamar/ Lynher today. Spoonbill, Avocet, Black-necked Grebe, hundreds of waders and wildfowl well worth a trip. Next one in February. #ukbirding
