A very interesting - and concerning - new scrolling story from my colleagues Malina Bodea and @daviesmiranda1.bsky.social on the factors which affect women's health ⬇️

Since 2011, working-age women have fared worse than men on many diseases.

Poor health also contributes to economic inactivity and addressing this is a government priority. But greater focus is needed on women who spend more of their working years living in ill health.

Déjà vu for social care? Reflections on today’s Immigration White Paper (a thread) 🧵

NEW: Ending care worker recruitment from abroad is hugely risky for a #socialcare sector facing a vacancies void, and reforms to make care jobs more attractive for UK workers won’t kick in for years.

New paper out today reveals scale of inequalities in social care!

💰 Care homes are better rated with more self-funded residents
👔 But inequalities in care only exist in the for-profit sector
📈 Outsourcing to for-profit sector accelerates inequalities of two-tier care

Phase 2 (long-term recommendations) of the commission is only mentioned briefly. This gives Baroness Casey more freedom to set the direction it will take as evidence is gathered by the team. Given the urgent need for reform, we hope to see firm plans, not just options for consideration, by 2028.

The commission will sit under the Cabinet Office, which should support its independence – acknowledging also the role of govt departments beyond DHSC: the Treasury, MHCLG & DWP. Strong & decisive leadership will be key to develop a coherent implementation plan recognising these interdependencies.

There are risks that financial pressures in the sector will escalate as the commission begins work. It’s too early to understand the impact of the new Employer National Insurance regime, but it could have potentially devastating implications for providers www.nuffieldtrust.org.uk/news-item/wi...
Will the Autumn Budget push the social care sector beyond breaking point?
While the recent budget brought better news for hard-pressed public services, social care was not so lucky. With many organisations fearing that changes to the Employer National Insurance Contribution...

It’s good to see the TORs include the interactions between the Fair Pay Agreement & Employment Rights Bill. We also note the mention of the interface between health &social care – watch out for our work on CHC highlighting the existing and oft ignored challenges that urgently need to be addressed
camille-oung.bsky.social
But there are risks that the narrow ‘focus to support the health mission’ - esp on elective care waiting lists & delayed discharges - means social care once more being lost to NHS priorities. It will be difficult to see results when social care is only one part of the puzzle: shorturl.at/oQSdR
Delayed discharges from hospital
We look at the number of patients experiencing delayed discharges from acute hospitals, their reasons for delay and where bottlenecks are most apparent.

It’s good to see the TORs allude to giving more power to people and their carers. While a positive broad intention, we hope that the commission also doesn’t lose sight of what adult social care is meant to achieve: supporting people and their carers to live independent and fulfilling lives.

...The financial envelope will need to offer enough scope to truly enable change, not just redirect existing financial flows.
