Given the association between post-childbirth career breaks and reduced career prospects, especially in the context of limited paid leave in the U.S., these findings highlight the potential role of occupational autonomy in mitigating the detrimental effects of motherhood on women’s careers.

Moreover, for both mothers who use and don’t use paid leave, mothers with higher occupational autonomy have a faster return to work than those with less autonomy.

In the absence of paid leave, the higher the occupational autonomy, the more likely a mother is to return to work within four months.
