Coalition Against More Surveillance

Ottawa residents, activists, and researchers concerned about calls for more surveillance and policing. #CareNotCams #NoCCTVinOttawa #DefundDisarmDismantle
Why are people so comfortable justifying the presence and 'need' for police by citing 'violence' in their crisis examples when police never actually stop the violence? This reliance on police keeps us from creating community-based support/capacity to interrupt violence. /5

What outcomes do partnerships like this (re)produce within the community when the discussion is once again perpetuating the idea that police are still the ones to intervene when *some* people are in a crisis? Has @ottawacity.bsky.social learned nothing from past mistakes? /4

Crime Stoppers focuses on criminalization as the main way to deal with harm and violence in the community. It's a glorified snitch line that fails to address the root causes/conditions driving violence in the community (or the violence committed by the cops). /3

Anchor was created as Ottawa's answer to residents' calls for a true non-police alternative for people in crisis. The point of having alternatives is to prevent people experiencing a crisis from being harmed by police and to stop conflating them as being dangerous or criminal. /2
