The term "Kanuck" is first recorded in 1835 as an Americanism, originally referring to Dutch Canadians (which included German Canadians) or French Canadians. By the 1850s, the spelling with a "C" became predominant. Today "Canuck" is used as an affectionate term for any Canadian.

On this day in 1987, Canada defeated Soviet Union to win Canada Cup. Team Canada defeated the Soviet Union 6-5 in the third and deciding game of the Canada Cup hockey tournament final in Hamilton. Wayne Gretzky set up Mario Lemieux for the winning goal — one of the most memorable in hockey history.
