Please try out a game called CAVE STORY. Many consider it to be the grandfather of indie games, especially metroidvanias like Hollow Knight. I would highly recommend it for that itch!

There's enough intention in the design to not require those details. We all know that it might have buttons. It's not necessary until it's something I make a narrative deal out of. Her outfit says plenty about her character.

Good character design tells a story.

Detail is a tool not a requirement, that's sort of the issue. Folks who aren't aware of this can have a bad influence on art direction. A lot of painting for example involves the viewer's own mind filling the gaps. I know this very well because of the pixel art medium. So yeah, I can see that.

I think that there's a purpose for all sorts of character designs and complexity. Good character design is flexible. For example, complex and flashy designs are good for gacha games because they're exciting to get. Comics have simpler designs because you have to draw them a bunch. Etc.

An important aspect of designing fighting game characters is readability so that's something I've gone for big time. I also like character designs that anyone can draw if they wanted.
