Yeah, it still happens, but it's definitely a "oh neat!" kinda thing instead of the default. Superman having Krypto is a great example.

Also as much as I love them? I kinda wish the present day Champions/Sages had more going on. Teba and Tulin especially have a rough time on this one, but Yunobo isn't much better, and while Sidon and Riju are fairly solid in BotW they also suffer from just kind of existing in TotK.

Like, the regional phenomenon in TotK feel like an attempt to crank up the uniqueness of each region compared to BotW where, yeah there were problems and differences between regions, but only Death Mountain felt proper oppressive as an environment.

Tangentially related; I know they were flying by the seat of their pants on these two games, and so that's why there's a bunch of stuff with that awkward disconnected feeling, but also: gods damn I would've loved to see some of these ideas expanded upon and with a bit more cohesion.
