Pope John Paul II, in his 1999 letter to artists, distinguishes creating and crafting; only God can create from nothing, to craft is to manipulate what is already present

He states that artists, made in the image & likeness of God, are able to participate in true creativity.

AI cannot.

SC 127 says bishops must support the work of artists. AI plagiarizes actual art and crashes the economy of sacred art, taking away work from actual artists and giving it to computers

SC 124 says the Church allows "changes in materials, style, or ornamentation prompted by the progress of the technical arts with the passage of time", but I posit generation via mathematical calculation is entirely different than a switch from Gothic to Baroque or marble to bronze

SC 124 says art must "strive after noble beauty rather than mere sumptuous display," and that art characterized by "lack of artistic worth, mediocrity and pretense" should be discarded

AI images are characterized by their mediocrity, glitches, and overly saccharine presentation

Sacrosanctum Concilum talks about "the fine arts" as an assumption when talking about sacred art. The fine arts are defined by requiring imaginative creativity and great artistic skill. Typing words to prompt mathematical calculation is not this.

AI images are cheap, not fine.

Pius XII continues "the function of all art lies in fact in breaking through the narrow and tortuous enclosure of the finite... and in providing a window to the infinite"

Something soulless and calculating from training data cannot comprehend & provide insight into the infinite.

Pope Pius XII wrote in 1952 "the more an artist lives religion, the better prepared he will be to speak the language of art, to understand its harmonies, to communicate its emotions."

Matrix multiplication cannot live religion or understand the language of art.
