My Jose Canseco card collection sat sad and alone in a bin for 25 years. But my love is rekindled! 1,188 and counting and I’m gonna try to post one a day.
The card’s design necessitated a mirror image of the front photo on the back, which is why you’re seeing an alternate universe left-handed Jose wearing a uniform with mirror-image lettering and logos. The fanned stats line is kinda cool, too. 2/2

At least they gave Jose a great write-up on the back. To bring things up to date, Jose Bautista (54 in 2010) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (48 in 2021) now have the top 2 HR seasons in Jays history, dropping Jose’s 46 to fourth. 2/2

I’m assuming the main image on the back is a screenshot from the CD-ROM, and it appears to be the moment Jose launched an ‘89 ALCS pitch into the SkyDome’s 500 level and broke my 16-year-old heart. But I still loved him. 2/2

Nice back, too, bringing over that blue and the circular pattern. Cool monthly stat breakdown, including his monster May with the Jays on ‘98. And a weird little blurb about the front photo. 2/2

This card was limited to a “mere” 4,000 copies, as you can see by the serial number. And the write-up tells us just how much Jose pulverized my Jays over the previous years with Oakland, Texas and Boston. 2/2

Just like yesterday with the away stats, Pinnacle only gives us 11 years worth of home stats, omitting his first two-plus seasons. To this point in his career, Jose had 16 more road HRs in 22 more games away from his home park. 2/2

There you go: oddly incomplete away stats from Jose’s previous 11 seasons, through ‘97, skipping ‘85-‘87. You can see right below the stat totals it says “Away Stats,” just so we’re all on the same page. Fun? 2/2

Why didn’t I think of that? Great point.

Can anyone spot the oddity on the back? The headshot is obviously a mirror image of the front pic because it’s on a translucent cel. But why did they remove the A’s logo on his cap? WEIRD! 2/2

Wild, I’m just about to post a card from the same set, and I’d never seen it before I got the card! But to answer your question, I’d say it qualifies.

Nice looking back, adding the Museum Collection logo in the bottom right to differentiate from the base card. The wood-art Red Sox bat is pretty dang cool. 2/2

No rules and regs on this one! It’s a real card back with a real write-up! Very impressive game for Jose that it mentions, but is it the “strongest reminder of his remarkable abilities?” I’d give that honor to being the first to 40/40. 2/2

Rules and regs, baby! If that doesn’t get you excited, there’s something wrong with you. Incidentally, Jose totally went deep against the Tigers on June 30, 1995! And you’ll soon see the card folks won for that. 2/2
