At least it's daytime, and the runner doesn't have to stand in the road in the dark and shine a light on his face "to show that I am kind..." Much less creepy for the locals this way.

Just under an hour slower than the first lap for Greig and Jared last year (8:46-ish,) and 1:15-ish slower than Jasmin's first lap (8:30-ish) last year. This isn't looking good.

This is a bit late, but I came here to say that “multiple failed attempts” is rather unkind. Carl could have just yelled “ding ding ding an hour to go!” But instead he had the proper device, and it made the proper noise.
