Sette waves goodbye to some rogues as she walks towards the viewer past a small religious shrine. Duane glumly walks behind, carrying a staff. He's hooded and all in grey.

What really makes Unsounded is the conversations between characters.

A teenage Black boy and a younger white boy talk. This is Jivi and Matty. Jivi is annoyed and Matty is cheerful.

Jivi: ...I'm not mean, y'know
Matty: I know.
Jivi: She's mean.
Matty: Sometimes!
Jivi: So why's everyone mad at me?

As Matte explains, the smoke around a religious icon of Fat Mother Yerta form to show Sette and Jivi sneezing at each other, their sneezes forming angry red spectral eels. Mother Yerta holds a tissue to Matty's nose.

Matty: I think... Mean is like a sneeze. One person sneezes and then everyone catches it. But if the person covers their mouth, it'll be all right.
Jivi: Well, why doesn't she cover her mouth?

Duane, looking scary and zombified, talks to a young Black girl, Siya, about art.

Siya: You should've been a printer! Drawing all day, selling books, that's what I'd do.
Duane: Instead I became one of the greatest wrights in the world, a knight of Alderode and a celebrant of the one god Ssael. I could with a thought dissolve the whole of this shrine like a stomach tablet.

Siya is unimpressed. As she explains the architecture of the building around her is rendered as sketches on paper.
Siya : You'd be so common, then.

Siya: Destroying things, that isn't special. Sure, blow up the shrine with the right spell. But the artists who thought it all up? Built it all? Dead, all dead, but still here. Every day we walk down halls they thought up, under statues that climbed out of their brains and hands; under mosaics that fell out of their eyes. Making things.. You make a thing and it lasts always, forever after you. You live forever unforgotten.

Duane:...I made children. The device is ready for you, arist. Make your forever.

Matty talks to an older woman Iori about her family and death.

Matty: I'm sorry your son died!
Iori: He died doing what he loved. And I'll talk with him again one day.
Matty: You will?

As Iori talks, the world becomes a gigantic celestial reunion.

Iori: At the end of all things, we'll get back all the memories of our old lives. We'll look around and realise we all know each other. Everyone around us is family. I'll see Dani across the crowd, and he'll see me, and it'll be like we were never apart, like time never existed and death was only the ticking of a phantom clock finally run down.

Matty and his father Mathis, both white-haired, talk about death by a river. Mathis is a young man with glasses and lilac eyes, shirtless.

Mathis: Do you.. think it better to be nothing?
Matty: I dunnoooo
Mathis: I think it better.

Mathis wrestles with vines and thorns bunched around something while Matty fishes.

Matty: How do you know?
Mathis: I... I don't know. No one can know. It's a question without an answer.
Matty: Then why did you ask me, Papa! Not fair!
Mathis: I don't know. I don't know.

There are some awesome monsters in this comic. My favourites are the senet beasts, immortal creatures from before time and entropy kicked in on the world.

A gigantic orange naga man, a snake monster, holds up a dead victim by the arm, tiny by comparison. He is surrounded by blue flames and has many tentacles framing his head.

A gigantic lizard made of light blue and purple crystal looms over some tiny people. She has four arms, and people are seemingly trapped crystallised on huge crystals cresting her head. Her eyes are bright pinpricks in dark cavernous sockets. Lower, some men react with horror.

Imagine a bird centaur. A humanlike red woman's torso emerges from the beak of a scrunched up raven. Her neck is long and weird, and her face has a red beaky flesh crest on the forehead. She has black hair, long spindly fingers, and six breasts. She approached Duane among a pile of burning bodies in a town street. He looks terrified.

Bird woman: You expected your paper god?

Two voices talk while the panel art shows many more senet beasts. As well as snake men and a giant raven there are walking trees, shaped like a camel made of mud with trees growing out the back. In the air whales made of water and clouds swim. There are giant ogres made of green earth. In the background an eyelike sun watches with a strange figure-8 pupil.

Voice 1: The twin gods always were. Like the black between the stars. Then idleness crept upon them and they crafted this world of Kasslyne. We senet beasts were their first, feckless tinkerings.

Voice 2: Sketches?

Voice 1: Perhaps. They were never satisfied with us. They thought the khert their greatest success: A force to arbitrate the systems of a finite reality. But to populate that finite reality they required finite beings.

Voice 1: So from teeming seas they grew you spiderpaws and lizardfolk.

The two of them have a really wonderful relationship. A lot of this story is about them figuring out how they can relate to each other. Surrogate father and daughter? Thief and attack zombie? Student and teacher? What's going on here!

Duane and Sette are in what looks like a modern train carriage given a fantasy magic treatment. Sette stands on the back of the seat, holding glowing eyeballs in midair above Duane's headless shoulders!

Duane is wearing long green religious robes, holding his grey head in one hand, and giving a thumbs up with the other hand.

Multiple panels. Sette and Duane are in some caved-in area with loose rubble around them. Sette lowers a large knife and begins to sob.

Sette: Nawt's g-gone as I 'spected at all, Duane!

She steps towards Duane, him in green shirt and grey cloak, and she jumps into his arms crying. Duane moves to hold her.

Close up on Sette and Duane. He looks fearful but his eyes are hidden. Partly under illusion, he has a nose. She looks annoyed and is brandishing a glowing red-silver amulet.

Sette: Ya had your fun, attack zombie- but time's come for me to be in charge.

Wide shot. Sette and Duane in a large room, maybe a church. Plants and lights hang from the ceiling, there's religious art on the walls of a red woman kneeling and sobbing, one large door is shiny and opalescent. Duane is hooded and cloaked.

Duane: ...You are a terror from hell.
Sette: Shut up. I'm so vexed with ya I hardly got words.

Her lackey and companion is Duane Adelier. He's a wizard priest from a weird country up North with a weird religion, and he's a zombie besides.

He'll have you thinking his backstory is the central mystery but don't believe it.

Duane is a tall man with grey skin, dressed in a heavy grey cloak and green clothes underneath. His eyes are covered by a hood. Sette looks up to him from a seat

Duane is casting a big showy spell, fireballs and green illusions of horned snake monsters. His face is revealed - he has no nose, just a bandage across the opening

Duane: I am Duane Adelier; soldier of god, evil's band, and Alderode's undoubting son. I don't require your friendship, Quigley, but I will have your respect!

Duane has succumbed to the urge to eat flesh. Illusions dropped, we can see his true form. Noseless, his head stitched and held together. He eats the gory remains of a victim, having pulled out the man's eye. Inset, he gives a quizzical look, not one of guilt or realisation that he's been caught. Red spectral eels float in the air around him.

Duane casts a small fire spell in his hands as human forms float in the smoke behind him. His illusion is on, showing a reasonably lifelike face, though still with grey skin. He has his cloak on, there's the hint of blond hair underneath. He has two piercings about one eyebrow.

Duane: Good men will one day make a world that does not so abhor us, Matty. Perhaps you will be one of them. Try to be brave.
