I still think my attempt at #climate #scicomm holds up, many years after I created it, but my "call for action" is weak tea given the inaction of the past 15 years. youtu.be/85TQHzS88L4?...

We are looking for a new postdoc to join a collaborative team at Indiana University. We are working to reduce bias in estimates of forest carbon uptake at local to global scales. Deadline for best consideration is November 15, 2025. More details below!

My go to place in San Francisco for decades was Caffe Sport, a funky hippy summer of love family restaurant. Alas it was sold a few years ago and is a pale shadow of the original now

I do science because I have to do science. It helps that I also care about people, so the science I do can sometimes help people, if I'm lucky, and it's not 2025.

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.

Exhibit Apr 9–Aug 10, 2025

Paintings of such ordinary Americans join her iconic portraits of First Lady Michelle Obama and, heartbreakingly, Breonna Taylor, to produce a resonant ode to the multiplicity and complexity of American identity.

I tell people that the problem is not coming up with ideas, I think of a couple dozen of them a day. The real problem is knowing which of the damn things is any good for writing up. Most of them are junk. I have to let them roll around in my brain a while to find out which is which.

With the likelihood of a gov’t shutdown increasing by the hour, paired with OMB’s ILLEGAL threats to fire federal employees who aren’t considered “essential”, we are preparing to go on the offensive.
