Purely as a matter of political rhetoric, it is self-defeating to talk up the importance and legitimacy of the opposing party when they are going around accusing your own side of stealing the election, trying to destroy America, etc
Biden made a classic Dem error, viewing McConnell’s refusal to hold a confirmation vote primarily as a personal affront to Garland, rather than as a partisan power play, and thought he was settling a score by making him AG even though it was basically a gift to Trump
Garland was a weak compromise even as a judge, Obama nominated him to SCOTUS as an olive branch to McConnell in the hopes of getting an up or down vote in the GOP Senate, it was total malpractice to make him AG
Michael Jackson, Madonna, Elvis, Elton John, Bob Dylan, I’m sure many more have all sold more albums as solo artists. You could maybe argue album sales aren’t the right metric for artists today though
Another path might involve a Dem adopting the same approach to an imperial presidency as Trump, incentivizing Republicans to join with institutionalist Dems to curtail executive power
He’s not there to present legal analysis, he’s answering her question in a way that communicates his values, which seems like a good instinct in a political candidate
They imagine a swing voter as a cross-pressured moderate who will be persuaded by whatever side seems most reasonable, when the reality is most swing voters aren’t paying attention to policy debates and only wake up for sensational controversies that cross over into mainstream discourse
I stopped by the brewery next door afterwards which was a better place to wait until it stopped raining, but yeah lots of interesting options in the area, would love any recommendations for tonight!
Thought I would swing by the Bombay Yacht Club while in Mumbai like I’m the Protagonist in Tenet but of course it’s members only and I can’t get in so ended up settling for the Starbucks across the street
This is why my advice to young people is always to study whatever fascinates you. You’ll probably work harder/learn more if you’re actually interested, and the work habits and study skills you develop are likely to be more helpful to you than your expertise, no matter what happens in the future
Actually no, it wasn’t a novel point by me, but you seemed to be misunderstanding a point originally made above by someone else, and I foolishly thought that I might be able to rephrase the same point in a way that would help advance the discussion. My mistake!
I’m nobody and that point has already been made a thousand times on here by people with large audiences but yes, I agree those remarks are shocking and objectionable, hope this clears up any misunderstanding
We are veering into “why do you hate waffles” territory now but I never said Newsom is more objectionable than some Fox News clown or that he’s never done anything right, I was responding to your denial that there is anything ironic about Newsom reaching for that particular verse
I don’t know why you would say that when don’t know me at all. I don’t need to prove anything to you but I have lived in CA for over 25 years, followed Newsom’s career since he was mayor of SF, and participated in actions in LA to protect the homeless in Echo Park so everything you said is wrong
