The moon was a waxing gibbous: a term I had just discovered in my science lessons. “Cyril, stop the car.” My mother said. “We shouldn’t go back, love. Not tonight.” “I don’t mean to go back. Just stop the car.” My father understood, even if I didn’t. He drove into a layby and Mother opened the door, leaned over, and retched.

My MC is thirteen years old here - I don’t think I yet realised the significance it would have once she’s an adult.
Text reading: With nothing not to hold, I linked my fingers together, still expecting to feel my own clammy skin but instead only touching the satin. It compelled me to carry my hands differently. There was the heaviness of the petticoats and the tightness of my church shoes and the bow in my hair that made me lift my head higher. I walked across the harsh stone floor like a grown woman would.
