77. American McGee's Alice

Who knows the logistics of the EA news yet, but I've always associated the American McGee series with them. Plus, I wanted to revisit Madness Returns.
It's rare to see a gem do exactly what it seemingly sets out to do, and the VO rocks. I'd love to create stuff like this.

76. Perfect Blue

I dig the upscale! This was a fun rewatch for what they couldnt and couldn't preserve on the big screen.
Still, even though it's a stepping stone for Satoshi Kon, it's easily my least favorite of his movies. The composition is all there, but the plot execution is laughably shallow.

75b.

The characters themselves would probably be more ripe for critique, but they act the way they need to to move the story along, so it doesn't dock points for me.
I love the storyboarding here too, especially as characters' faces are obscured as much as they are during heavy dialogue segments.

75. A Silent Voice (movie)

Watched this while recovering. Used to only see comparisons between the JP and the dub, so this was my first time seeing the dub in full--it's been praised I think anywhere I've read about it, but Lexi M Cowden's performance really is lovely and fits each scene she's in!

No Face being content with his little cake is suoer small and in the backdrop in the third act, but I think it's a great parallel to Chihiro crying over a rice ball. A little token of welcomeness directed at him makes him way happier than gorging himself on a feast he was judged for even coming near
cargodin.bsky.social
The other bathhouse staff are interesting because they all want to be treated as VIP guests while also joking about how repulsive their actual guests are, so it's an interesting spot for Chihiro to be in if her resentment for her parents wanting better got her into her predicament in the first place
cargodin.bsky.social
I used to think Spirited Away was just about hard work, maybe that's also true to most Miyazaki works--more characters hit their resting point in the plot doing some manual labor, but Chihiro and Haku are the sole employees at the coffee shop NOT making youtube skits about how all the customers suck
cargodin.bsky.social
If Spirited Away is about the inevitability of looking down on other people--even those we care about (like how Yubaba mistreats both her precious "son" and her disposable Haku), No Face too is fun to think about cuz he gives and gives to the point that he's vapor and is still viewed as a parasite

Even if it is an Alice in Wonderland take on the anxieties of moving and leaving one's childhood home, I'm not sure whether I prefer it all being a dream or not. Typically, I dislike copping every adventure up to "just a dream," but it fits this one more than like, any other Ghibli film.

If Haku accepts being torn apart by Yubaba after Chihiro leaves, it fits with the theme maybe? that the river she used to live near in itself cannot ever be returned to. Or, if you like the "dead brother -> river spirit -> lost soul of a river spirit" take, that he can't come back to life either
cargodin.bsky.social
I think Yubaba was in the right to hide her parents in that way, as it would've been right to fail Chihuro for it--but it falls in line with the interpretation that the events of the movie were entirely internal for Chihiro. Makes sense too when her final goodbye is to the "river" by her old home.
cargodin.bsky.social
Personal take on the pig-guessing scene in Spirited Away is that Chihiro has bonded enough with so many people at the bath house, she simply doesn't "see her parents as pigs" at all as she did in the beginning--when she viewed them as more or less self-interested. (It's circumstantial, but eh.)

74. Fire Emblem Shadows

I picked this up as soon as it stealth dropped, and I've cleared Book 1 of the story.

Maybe the animal form hook is cool, but I don't think the whodunnit gameplay in round 1 is effective at all.

Do wish the voice cast was credited though! It's annoying to guess!!!

Honestly I love the acrylic stand sets of her and the Vivi children sooo much. I feel like if that cartoon featurinf them actually happened, it'd make perfect sense for Freya to show up in an episode or two with some followup for her
cargodin.bsky.social
I do like 8 but to compare the two on character development, Freya does get an epilogue to her story whereas i.e. Zelle really deserved/needed some kind of storyline with his mother following the baskrtball scene--which is where pretty much every party member except for Rinoa+Squall buzz off forever

"Hello! It says you have 7 on your reservation."

"Yes."

"And there are only 6 of you. Is that not everyone."

"No it's everyone."

If someone did do this, there oughta be a secret moogle the staff pulls out of a cabinet to sit at your table during the meal. (For real tho dooon't do this lmao)
cargodin.bsky.social
Spwaking of the FFIX Cafe, i think for this one menu item in particular itd be funny for someone to order +1 more than the actual headcount of the party when making their reservation just to call that party planning minigame on its bluff. (Never do this.)

But you know they dont give a damn about VIII cuz Lightning was BORN for a Squall Leonhart leather costume to go with her gunblade but they dressed her up as Aerith AND Summoner Yuna. Why rob the lesbians so hard

I dont think I spelled a single fucking sentence correctly and here I am wondering why I am Brynnie the Unhirable lmao
cargodin.bsky.social
Then again when they interviewed him, the common consensus was that he recorded for Clive like 500 fucking years ago and I really think we'dve heard about IX by now with or without a smaller studio working on it unless they were spending hella money and Sir Ian McKellan voices a cochroach or sumthin
