I would be thrilled to see real-time chats come back... I miss them since the demise of Twitter. But so far, I don't see many. #sunchat was running and hopefully will be back in September, but I'd love to see more!

They blame the Ts & the school for everything. If a student doesn't take responsibility for their actions, they can't improve. We see the difference. Ss whose Ps have reflective convos with them about their behavior, improve with time. Those whose Ps blame everyone else, continue to misbehave.

Definitely, schools need to teach differently. But Ps also need to support schools. We're an innovative school using PBL, inquiry, student-centered learning, etc. We also use restorative practices rather than punishment. However, many of our Ps don't support us in this.

We tried, without success, to minimize cell phone use in our school. Finally in 2019 we banned them altogether and had the same experience with students. They loved being phone free. At the end of this post, I have quotes from student interviews:

We have students self-assess on a progression of learning, set goals & try to improve. Ss need to clearly understand what collaboration looks like & sounds like in order to do it well.

Celebrations like this foster pride, showcase progress, and remind us all that writing isn't just an academic skill...it's a way of shaping the world.

Parents, students, and teachers wandered the “streets,” pausing to read student work, pick up a bouquet wrapped in a student’s quote, or spot a “Now Hiring” sign recruiting future writers for next year’s classes.

I agree. If we are more thoughtful (hmmm, let me use a thesaurus to improve this sentence) we can lower impact. And teach our students to do so as well.

The best thing is, this teacher used to hate lesson planning... Now she looks forward to it.
