A cultural anthropologist in Providence is among 22 national winners of “genius” grants announced Wednesday by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Professor Lauren Williams was joined by a cultural anthropologist in Providence and a cartographer and basketmaker from Maine as the New Englanders named to this year's class of MacArthur fellows.

In a blistering ruling, a federal judge in Boston found the federal government violated the free speech rights of international students and academics who engaged in Pro-Palestinian activism.

In his ruling, US District Judge William Young wrote that the members of the Trump administration coordinated between departments to “intentionally to chill the rights to freedom of speech.”
