But it seems to me that there IS a line. Humans are the only species capable of causing the extinction of other species, including our own. Uncharacteristically, I’m not hopeful, but I’m trying to take comfort in Goodall’s optimism: “…there is hope…It's in our hands… it’s really up to us.”

With the passing of Jane Goodall today, we lost one of the most consequential voices in environmental science and animal behavior. In 2002, she said, “We have found that…there isn't a sharp line dividing humans from the rest of the animal kingdom.”
