Relieved to have got round the Kielder Marathon in one piece yesterday, and to (miraculously after the last few weeks) have finished a bit faster than last year too. It really is a beautiful but relentlessly hilly race! The joint care supplements in the finishers bag were very apt... 😅

📣 Deadline extended until 30th November!

We welcome submissions from studies offering both modern and palaeo perspectives of ice streams and outlet glaciers and hope this special collection will help to cross-pollinate ideas and theoretical insights into one of glaciology's most important topics! ❄️
carolineclason.bsky.social
A reminder that submissions are now open for the @igsoc.bsky.social special collection of the Annals of Glaciology on ‘Ice Streams and Outlet Glaciers’. Accepted papers will be published continuously and will be brought together in an online thematic collection in 2026: www.igsoc.org/ice-streams-...

Yikes indeed! Bet there were a few unhappy football fans 🤣

We seek contributions on any aspect of ice streams and outlet glaciers, both palaeo and contemporary, including observations at a range of spatial and temporal scales and insights from numerical modelling. Please contact myself and Chris Stokes for any questions about submitting to this collection!❄️

Be sure to check out our sessions at the @rgsibg.bsky.social Annual Conference tomorrow! The sessions are jam-packed with variety and include live performances and displays of creative work. I wasn't able to attend in-person sadly, but @hywelgriffiths.bsky.social will be chairing in the room!

Israel bombed a hospital.

Rescue workers and reporters rushed to recover the dead and the wounded.

Israel bombed the hospital again. Live on TV.

Read that again.

Our government’s legacy will be its complicity in crimes against humanity. End all arms sales to Israel, now.

Bank holiday activities included catching up with @beardydylan.bsky.social while he's visiting from Canada (lovely to get a copy of his PhD thesis too - I'm a very proud supervisor! 😊), and painting the front door and garage to brighten up the house a bit... I think it looks better?! 😬🖌️🩵

Looking forward to convening the @geolsoc.bsky.social GeoFutures conference on 15th September. We have five fantastic keynote talks (including by @klausdodds.bsky.social who will discuss "making sense of a no longer reliably frozen Arctic" ❄️). Come join us online! www.geolsoc.org.uk/events/geofu...

I'd say that's a pretty good summary Chris! Fancy writing it up as a conference report? 😁

Big shout-outs also to three brilliant female scientists who were presented with IGS awards during the symposium... Dorthe Dahl-Jensen who received the Seligman Crystal, @icymatters.bsky.social who received the Firn Award, and @iceybethan.bsky.social who received the Richardson Medal. 🥂

Reflecting back on how enjoyable it was to host the @igsoc.bsky.social Symposium here at @geogdurham.bsky.social. A big thank you to everyone who attended, presented and contributed to organisation! It was lovely to see so many friendly faces and to hear about some fantastic glaciological science! ❄️

Excited to have started a new role as Co-Director of the IHRR. I'll be developing my work on environmental risk, hazards and water security in glacial environments, while fostering new cross-sector collaborations and supporting others with their own research ideas.

This is an interesting thing to ponder. In university settings it sometimes feels like we are moving away from oracy, debate, and presentations due to the the fear of causing anxiety to some students, but in doing so we are in danger of neglecting a vital skill. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Another way we are failing an entire generation: we must teach young people to speak | Simon Jenkins
The PM promised to prioritise oracy lessons, but has failed to do so. Set against tests and exams, it is seen as a luxury: in fact it is essential, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

I might not have come home with a finisher's medal this year but Islay suits the Lakeland 100 race buff and is happily providing cuddles! 🐾❤️🤣
carolineclason.bsky.social
Thanks Allen. The lead-up just wasn't ideal in the end, but I'll try again 😊

Apparently organizing a symposium and finishing Lakeland 100 don't mix... my first DNF. Not enough rest or the right food over the week, conference dinner the night before the race, lots of nausea, and bad feet from the wet conditions. It just wasn't going to happen this time, but I gave it a shot!

Another great day of the IGS symposium, with a field trip visiting evidence of glaciation in upper Teesdale, Eden Valley drumlins at Brough Castle, the fluvioglacial landscape of the Brampton Kame Belt, and streamlined bedforms from Tyne Gap ice streaming (plus Roman archaeology) at Hadrian's Wall!

Fantastic turnout at the
@igsoc.bsky.social symposium ECR event last night! Really insightful advice from @iceybethan.bsky.social and Becky Sanderson about how to navigate networking and conferences! We enjoyed putting their tips into practice during speed networking afterwards.
