Ensuring equitable recognition for researchers addressing locally relevant topics would align scientific production with regional needs, while also removing obstacles for women in science.

Regional academic circuits provide platforms to publish research focused on topics relevant to Latin American countries, but evaluation systems favoring publication in international journals orient researchers' focus towards topics relevant to central countries.

What does this mean in terms of research evaluation? Women are less cited. Publications on regional topics receive fewer citations on average.

Why? We find an overlap between women’s research interests and issues specifically relevant to Latin America. Women focus on topics such as Infection Prevention in Hospitals, Nutrition in Schools, Recyclable Waste Pickers' health, and Violence Against Women.

However, women remain underrepresented in the scientific literature. We found that women systematically publish more than expected within the regional academic circuit, even after controlling for the disciplines in which they are active.

We studied gender inequality among Latin American scientists, focusing on how topic choices drive men and women's participation in the global and regional academic circuits. Between 1993 and 2022, women have constantly increased their participation in scientific publications.
