@msbellows I love it so much, and it led me to a lot of movies I didn't know but love now, like The Crimson Kimono!

Every few years, a young white hunky guy with crazy eyes is born and groomed to become a Claire Denis villain.

My spouse opined that if you think you might be that trull, you are not.
carrideen.c18.masto.host.ap.brid.gy
The other tidbit I wanted to share was that an audience member sitting behind me came in ranting about the trull who pushed past him at the door, and my thought process went (1) wow, "trull," (2) moi???

@VCP I came in late October 2022! I don't think we interacted on Twitter but who can say? I am glad to know you now though! ❤️

Adrian Lyne was lovely and rambly and sweet in conversation with a visibly nervous Aaron Stewart-Ahn. Other tidbits: a guy in line with us had never seen JL but is an extra in an upcoming Friday the 13th prequel and hopes he gets a very bloody death. *fingers crossed* alt text incoming

@friede.bsky.social I got addicted to the Icelandic skyr a boyfriend of mine's mother would smuggle into the US for him, and none of the US imitations come close. For a long time, I got Scandinavian students to bring it to me!

@friede.bsky.social Skyr is supposed to be skim milk though! Creamy skyr is an abomination.

At IFC Center for the 4K restoration of Jacob's Ladder with a conversation with Adrian Lyne. I have loved this movie longer and more consistently than any other. ❤️ I once got sent home from a date at 2am because I put it on and it scared my date too much!

currently reading a gay novel called “The Spring Before Obergefell” by Ben Grossberg; it has a 50 year old gay man as a main character, and it feels raw and real and true to life. even though it is probably technically a “romance” it doesn’t feel like a romcom or a hallmark movie or a fairy tale […]

@hannah Anti-Pamela is AMAZING. Fantomina is extremely short and also jaw-dropping. She's so mean and great!

@hannah Trollope must have read Eliza Haywood. I feel like all of her work has this same first page.

I want to encourage people in my field to see that social media could be more than a "hot or not" test for nerds. When I post about an article I've published here, people actually click through. Some even read my work! My friendships here never feel like we're showing off an elite connection in […]

I made the blogger's mistake of thinking those relationships were real. I did buy everyone's books, if I liked them online. I came to their Zoom book release parties, and attended their talks on panels. I even read their books, and shared them with students! But I think it was because my […]

Most of all, I was surprised that people think Twitter was a good place to share your published scholarship. I think maybe one person bought my book because I was on Twitter. I posted about articles I'd published and I don't think anyone clicked through ever. Academic Twitter mostly stayed on […]

I never got on Bluesky, but I was one of earliest Twitter users. I quickly tired of the tiny character limit and doubled down on blogging. I came back to Twitter when I was finishing my book because that seemed important, and found that everything was so hierarchical. Someone with 5k followers […]

Over the weekend, I wrote to the nearly 200 members of c18.masto.host who joined us in 2022-2024 and then stopped logging in over a year ago. I've gotten several emails back saying that after committing to Bluesky, social media as a whole came to feel like a bad idea. It is my hope that keeping […]
