If I was him, I'd probably blame my advisor who fabricated data and made it a lot harder for their students and coauthors to not get tainted, particularly after they had to retract a paper while on the market. But what if that person was white? Well, what do I know?

They never can see their arguments applying to themselves. If everything Shapiro says is true about Carlson, then it is also true about Shapiro, who built up Carlson and others previously. There was some introspection at the start, but the problem is always someone else for them.

I'm imagining a response to this that's a long-run joke like "The Aristocats" but the punch line is, "And they call it, The Academy", only instead of being gross things it's all the good things, like small group workshops, reading groups, and learning circles, and young people becoming wiser.
