Britain’s history (like any country’s) is built by the migration of people. Our very language is a patchwork from numerous cultures. I want to be a part of a nation who are proud of their multicultural heritage, and who will help those who need a safe place to live. And I’m not alone! (5/5)

However, when I left campus this afternoon, my negative emotions were inverted by seeing these posters. This is the British attitude we need. This made me happy, because I knew that I was not the only one appalled by the stolen symbolism of the flags. (4/5)
A photograph of a poster tied to a post. The poster reads: “Our Community Stands for Love and Respect
To our neighbours and friends,
In our neighbourhood, overyone is wolcome, regardless of your notionality, background, or beliefs.
Vie do not tolerate racism or hato in any form. The flags and their Intended message do not represent the many of us who live here.
We believe in kindness, friendship, and unity.
This is a ploce for love, respect, and togetherness, for overyone.
There aro mory positive wovs we ean chaus rasneet and aatriatism without the flog flying ot half mast on lamp posts:
• Look out for your neighbours and offer a helping hand
• Xeep our streets clean and safe
• Celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions that enrich our community
• Support local shops, cofes and events
• Py tmbah of peace, unity or Iacal aride on your own probert.
wthout disretpecting public spaces.
LOVE OUR CONMUNITY. LOVE LOUICHROROUGH, HATE RAGISM”

Appalled because these displays of twisted “patriotism” make me ashamed to be English, and enraged because of the appropriation of my country’s flag for political ideologies which I do not at all agree with. (3/5)

Yesterday when I was leaving @lborouniversity.bsky.social campus, I was appalled and enraged to see these flags being strung up by a small group of right wing individuals. (2/5)

I don’t often post about politics on social media. Partly because I want my social media use to be professional or near professional. Partly because I don’t think social media is the space for reasoned and mature political debate. However, I feel I need to post about this: (1/5)

It was a pleasure to be at the Loughborough University PhD awards last night with the rest of the Creative Reactions Pint of Science team 2025.

We were shortlisted for Team of The Year and it’s fantastic that we could celebrate together.

I’m back from Lancaster for the 20th annual @thebsls.bsky.social Conference!

Thank you for the opportunity to present my paper “Don’t Laugh: Maybe a Dog?: Lessons From the Design and Pilot Study of a Survey Analysing Reader Descriptions of Poetry’s Speakers and Addressees”

Snappy title, I know.

Final call!

Survey closes this Saturday

Well, now I've settled into bluesky a little, put up my feet, made a cup of tea, and fallen asleep by the fire I suppose I should tell them as don't know about my survey for my PhD:

Any and all responses welcome, and all you need to do is read poems. Easy.

Update on this: I got a response yesterday, and it was a rejection.

I’m pretty sure it was a tiered rejection, though, which always helps.

Nevertheless it’s another row of red on my submissions table.

I am waiting to hear back on a poetry journal submission.

I should have expected a response by now.

I always give some extra leeway before chasing up.

I think “they must be seriously considering my work”

However, I do keep obsessively checking emails.

This happens every few months.

1. Butcher’s Dog

The Butcher’s Dog
Sits by the window.

Faithful hound
hungry from lingering
cow-blood perfumes,

lays head on paw,
rolls eyes,
sighs,
then wags tail like a smile.

The butcher is home.
Spring is home.

———

@butchersdog.bsky.social I hope you don’t mind being the guinea pig.

I had the idea to write (& post) some short poems every so often which are inspired by the title of a poetry magazine or press.

They probably won’t be my best work, but if I enjoy it I’ll keep going.

It’s a show of my appreciation for people who choose to dedicate their time to publishing poems.
