A master and commander movie where the entire runtime is just the crew showing Aubrey around the ship and explaining the names and purposes of the individual sails and riggings.

Correct. Drivers are not proactive about yielding to pedestrians. They have to believe they will hit you if you don’t stop. It’s kind of a game of chicken we have to play as pedestrians (sadly).

I’ve been lucky to avoid falling, but came close a couple times! I hope your falls haven’t resulted in any significant injury!

I think that’s right, and that people are often not making the decision out of necessity but out of convenience. The balance of convenience weighs heavily in favor of cars in most parts of Chicago, and even where cars aren’t a strict necessity

It's great for car-free living if you're in specific areas, but the vast majority of residents own cars, which says to me that it's not a great city to live car free for most people. More people would sell their cars if transit/biking/walking was more convenient than driving.

The Discourse is about speed cameras and ignition interlocks. Neither of these are carceral, because they are alternatives to police and prisons. Speed cameras remove racist and violent cops from enforcement of speeding, and interlocks prevent multiple offenses - or crashes - that lead to jail time.

for whatever reason, the victims of traffic violence never factor into the calculation. no urgency there. but do something that might affect a suburban lawyer who had a few drinks and then it becomes an “equity” issue

And why does the alder have the power to make that decision in the first place? If the city/CDOT determines a street needs pedestrian safety measure, why does an alder get to overrule that determination?

Also local neighborhood groups. You're in a city, not a small town. Your neighborhood is not a small town.

Why do we have car lanes if drivers never use them???
