Some new castle visits on our trip to the Isle of Arran and Scotland recently. This is Lochranza Castle, a beautifully sited L plan tower house mainly dating from the 16th century. A bucket list trip for me, and was not disappointed! 🙂

Lacock Abbey started as a nunnery in the 1200s before becoming a Tudor family home. Since then it has evolved with every owner and in 1835, the first photographic negative was captured in the Abbey. Also used as a filming location for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey amongst other things.
The first ever photograph was taken of this window in the Abbey.

Nice misty early morning dog walk around beautiful Lacock near us in Wiltshire. A really beautiful place, the whole village is owned by the National Trust. Highlight of highlights is Lacock Abbey, followed by the great Tithe Barn and too many other things to name! Also came across a WW2 pillbox.

This was a real bucket list visit, the superb Castle Rising in Norfolk. Magnificent Norman keep within huge earthworks, this is a must visit! 😁

Another of my favourites, Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire - love this place, a very well kept English Heritage site. Built in the 1390's for John, Lord Lovell and blown up during the English Civil War when gunpowder was accidentally detonated in a stray gunpowder mine!

Hi all, I've just made the jump from Twitter to Bluesky. I love history, castles in particular. Here's my first photo, one of my favourites - Portchester Castle. A fabulous site, dating from Roman times, well worth a visit! 😁
