The amphitheatre at Caerleon was built c.AD 90 for sports, military and religious festivals, and/or combat training. 🏟️ The arena grandstand would’ve been a timber construction that could seat 6,000 spectators.

#RomanFortThursday - Biriciana (also called Kastell Weißenburg), a former Roman cavalry fort along the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. Originally made of timber around AD 90, the square fort was rebuilt in stone in the middle of the 2nd century AD.

#RomanFortThursday - Castrum Arutela, a fort erected in AD 138 in Dacia (modern-day Romania) on the Limes Alutanus and built by a unit of Syrian archers. The Limes Alutanus, built by Hadrian to stop invasions and raids from the east, was a fortified line consisting of a vallum and a line of forts.

The bath house of the legionary fortress in Rottweil/Arae Flaviae - my hometown 🙂.
Unfortunately, these are the only visible remains of the fortress, that was used from ca. 75/80 AD to 85/95. The Legio XI Claudia Pia Fidelis had been stationed here. After the ....1/2

Ancient remains of the amphitheater in Carnuntum, a major city and legionary fortress of the Roman Empire. 2nd century AD. Altars for the Goddesses Fortuna and Nemesis were found at the south gate. After gladiator games were forbidden, Christians reused them for their baptistery.
