Nigella is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of philosophers and scholars, whose feast day is 25th November. The bracts of "St. Catherine's flower" are said to represent a breaking wheel, a device used by Emperor Maxentius in his attempt to break her faith.
