I was about to suggest Kindred, I adore that book. Other favourites in this area are Penny Spikins How compassion made us human, and Bones and Ochre: the Curious Afterlife of the Red Lady of Paviland. The Paviland book is really fascinating look at techniques for obscuring evidence in the 19th C
