I was finally discharged around 1 p.m. and all I wanted was a decaf Dunkin’ macchiato and my own bed.

It was scary and traumatic, but I’m home now, healing, and so grateful it was all caught in time.

By Sunday morning, I was ready to go home more than anything. PT had me walk the halls and I did everything unassisted. OT cleared me too. But I still had to wait because my nurse was concerned about bruising and paged gynecology to check me again. That wait felt like forever.

But my hemoglobin, which was 13 before all of this, had dropped to 8.1 even after the transfusion. So I stayed another night. I barely slept, someone came in every two hours for vitals, meds, or checking my abdomen but I finally started to feel stable.

Waking up from the second surgery was completely different. I felt instantly better. They told me they rinsed out the blood and fluid, checked my stitches, and gave me a blood transfusion. They removed 350ml of blood and clots from my abdomen. I felt like I could breathe again.

They gave me more gabapentin, and honestly by then I was so scared and exhausted I didn’t even care.

When I got to the OR, I couldn’t transfer myself because the chest pain was too intense, so they moved me with a board. My doctor held my hand as I fell asleep, and I will never forget that.

I called my husband at 5:30 a.m., barely able to explain what was happening.

I was back in pre-op by 7:30. I had eaten a handful of Goldfish at 3:30 a.m. (the first solid food in days), not knowing I’d need emergency surgery, but it was too late to do anything about it.

Afterward she told me, “I think you’re going to need another surgery.” And she was right. Within an hour she came back and told me I needed a second surgery to remove the blood and fluid so it didn’t cause an infection or abscess.

My doctor actually came in around 4 a.m. on her day off to examine me. When she pressed on my abdomen, the fluid surged upward and it felt like my chest collapsed. I couldn’t breathe and started hyperventilating. I thought I was having a heart attack.
December 11, 2025 at 2:55 PM
Then things kept getting stranger. My chest started hurting (I assumed it was gas), and I couldn’t get the incentive spirometer above 500… then 250. They ordered a CT scan, and later told me they found blood and fluid in my abdomen. They weren’t sure if I was actively bleeding.

They ended up draining 300 mL with a catheter, but the pressure was still there, and my blood pressure was not improving so they admitted me for observation.

I had severely low blood pressure. My husband told me later my lips were blue and my skin had gone white. He said it was the scariest thing he had ever seen. The whole time, my bladder felt like it was going to explode but I still couldn’t urinate.
December 11, 2025 at 2:53 PM
They wheeled me to the bathroom, but I still couldn’t pee. I started blacking out, dropped the puke bag they had given me and the next thing I remember is waking up back in bed. They tried several other times to get me up to urinate each time I got sick and nearly passed out.
December 11, 2025 at 2:52 PM
Then came the bathroom test. If you’ve had anesthesia, you know they want to make sure you can pee on your own. They removed my catheter, I tried to stand, and instantly felt sick. Overheated, nauseous, cold sweats, pretty much everything at once.

It helped a bit, but I was still freezing cold and shaking under a pile of blankets. I literally couldn’t stop shaking!
December 11, 2025 at 2:50 PM
But the moment I woke up in recovery, everything went downhill fast. I woke up in immediate, intense pain. I was crying, shaking, completely disoriented. They kept asking my pain level while pushing meds, but nothing touched it until they finally gave me a tiny dose of fentanyl.
