it's been a long time since i thought about whedon and his work, but an element of what i've seen is the popular person who has undergone a fall. so a cheerleader who has moved and is easy to keep in her place because she's a little weird and edgy. a captain shifted to the margins.

Yeah, Whedon’s protagonists are usually interrogating totally different archetypes—blonde cheerleader, dark brooding rogue, intrepid captain, chameleon-spy, etc

But those are all “popular kid” types who gather a gang of lovable losers *around them*
