Hi folks, Chris here.

I figure I should do one of these intro things. I'm a prof at NIU, studying special districts and/or state preemption (people typically know me for one or the other).

I post a lot about local govts, Illinois, and cycling.

Welcome!

Ah, never mind. Mountain is doing its weird “I’m actually pacific” thing right now.

It should help. Plus I’m going only one hour different but in opposite directions. Mountain tomorrow; eastern next week.

There’s gonna be a point where I’m not gonna know what city I’m in.

I don’t know how people travel for a living. I have three conferences this month, and I cannot keep anything straight.

To preserve community character, around here, but that's ultimately the same thing or worse (build literally nothing at all and encase the place in amber).

No, not typically. There is a reprogramming process that involves GAO and Congress, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say none of that is happening.

Well that's not how appropriations work at all

Earlier this year, I boarded a flight at JFK, was informed that the crew had lost the pilot, deplaned, and then waited for two hours until someone either found the pilot or a replacement. It was interesting.

"we can't begin boarding because we're missing two crew members."

Excuse me, what?

The weighting of the factors is bewildering (and exclusion of other stuff they also collect in Health). Such a miss.

Your shot of Malört is also waiting. 😉

This lines up perfectly with the counsel I give my MPA students. Your employer is paying you for your (critical thinking) skills. The second you aren't delivering on that is the second you aren't useful anymore.

This is literally the only interpretation of these things. Rs could end this in whatever time it takes to do a voice vote in both houses, but they chose not to (because they don't have the votes). None of that is the responsibility of the Dems to fix.

Sounds like Republicans ought to get all the Republicans who form the Republican majorities in the Republican-led House and the Republican-led Senate together to pass the budget that Republicans wrote with the Republican White House and that Republicans now insist absolutely must be passed.

Pretty sure I saw juvenile bald eagle on my bike ride today, perhaps a female. Tannish/moddled head + way bigger than a hawk was the give away (plus, we have a cluster of them living nearby). It never ceases to be amazing.

Recommend: Boiled cider. Look it up.

Also, if you can buy from an orchard, just do that. It's a pain to make. Not hard, but annoyingly long and easy to burn.

Just saw One Battle After Another and I think I have to change my analogy.

I love that this admin watched Sicario and said, "But what if in the US?"

Thanks, I hate it here.

(I also refuse to do this stuff, mostly because I don’t trust companies with that data.)

Discord said late on Friday that hackers stole users' government-issued IDs (passports and driver's licenses) from one of its customer support databases.

I wrote a few words about the risks of age verification laws, and why collecting people's government IDs is bad for security and privacy.
Discord says users' government IDs used for age checks stolen by hackers
Thanks to age verification laws, expect more data breaches of users' government-issued passports and driver's licenses.

Don't paper over internal Republican struggles. They aren't unified, and that's their problem. It is in no way the responsibility of Democrats to save the Republicans.

Quibble: Republicans hold a majority in the Senate. They don't need the Dems to pass a funding bill (and frankly, don't want them), so the correct headline is "Senate Republicans continue to fail to pass a CR."
kylegriffin1.bsky.social
Breaking: Senate Democrats hold firm and reject the Republican-backed stopgap funding bill.

Every passing day makes this take more and more correct.

I have a little helper script from @dhmontgomery.com that resizes ggplot output, which would work in the way that you describe. It wouldn't be nearly as clean, but it's quick
