“It’s been about four days.” I count the red leaves of the fellonettle hanging off the side of the adjacent building. The long black vines reach down towards the ground level, sprouting brilliantly crimson buds every handful of inches. They gleam like polished rubies, set out from the inky leaves that stuck to the white limestone; staining the walls at unreachable heights for the city cleaners. They say it is bad luck to be gifted an unbloomed fellonettle. The furled leaves ooze a toxin that normally is hidden on the underside of the plant. It’s what makes them stick to surfaces. It also is what makes them such a valuable plant for apothecaries. The toxin, when distilled properly, is used in everything from dyes to medication.

"Just a little farther, Percival." I didnt move, even as the patience strained in his voice. My own, inner voice - the years of training- finally screamed in my ears. No. The high pitched ringing only grew louder as the door behind Roland opened wider. Figures moved about in the light of hundreds of candles lining the walls. I pull my hand away and reach for my sword. Only to grab air. Right. I dont have it. It's sitting in its case on my desk, waiting for tomorrow's ceremony. I had no reason to bring it with me to the ball - most of the squires left their blades for the evening. I wish I'd been one of the few who hadn't.

I disappeared again, but I have been writing this time.

Also, got engaged. He proposed in our living room, with the antique sarcophagus bookshelf I bought with the money he had set aside for the ring (he didn't tell me that until after, and was also excited for the bookshelf)

No. That’s a lie. I would have lifted a single finger - but not my entire fist. “Percival AuClair,” his shout rang high above the clash of steel. A few nearby squires pretended to run their drills - like they hadn’t just been enraptured by the fight that had nearly broken out. I sigh, turning to see a second red face - though this one with anger - as Captain Damir sprinted the short distance of the yard. “You’re in for it now,” Xavier grunts in my ear, cradling his jaw. His putrid breath is warm on my neck and I don’t even try to suppress the shudder as I take a large step to the left. Also, how dare he assume that I am the only one about to be in trouble when I can feel a bruise forming on the underside of my jaw? Xavier’s knuckles are a bloody mess from where they connected. "Fill the buckets." Damir spits the words as though they've personally offended him—and honestly, they might as well have. The disgust on my face mirrors his, clear as the twin suns overhead. "Do not argue, Percival. You have only four days left until you graduate, and if you think I won’t throw you out now, you're sorely mistaken." “No, I believe you.” “Just because your father-” Damir carried on his tirade as though I hadn’t spoken. The same excuse that any of the professors fell back on whenever I did anything they deemed even a hairsbreadth out of line. My illustrious father, despite his youthful heroics, is nothing more than a semi-washed-up politician—and not even a good one. He serves as the sixteenth Headmaster of the Knight's College and holds the title of Minister of War. Conri Maher is my second main character.
He is a druid, a member of the Shield of Clirna, and Percival's childhood friend. Conri's mentor was one of the companions who fought alongside Percy's father to restore balance to the realm.
