In a meta-NIMBY twist, their zoning permit was challenged by neighbors upset about the odor
Text: In July 2021, even as the Sheriff’s Office was investigating SBGL, Hines’s and Olowski’s zoning permit application was approved by the county Planning & Development director. Hines’ neighbors, Kathi and Bill Hames, promptly appealed to the county Planning Commission to deny the permit. The county Planning Commission denied the appeal and approved the permit for the Mail Road property, noting that the operators planned to install carbon filters to reduce the cannabis smell at the indoor cultivation building and greenhouses.

Text: On Aug. 31, 2016, county records show, William “Bubba” Hines, president of Ridgelake Energy Inc., an oil and gas drilling firm in Metairie, Louisiana, purchased a 99-acre property with 30 acres planted in wine grapes at 705 Mail Road. The price was $1.6 million. Hines constructed a greenhouse and an industrial building on the property, and in April 2019, county records show, he and Olowski applied for a zoning permit for the cultivation of 3.5 acres of outdoor cannabis, two cannabis greenhouses, 5,800 square feet of indoor cultivation, and the conversion of two residences and a storage barn for cannabis processing. Hines also owns a 70-acre vineyard property at 1052 Drum Canyon Road, which he purchased in 2017 for $1.7 million, records show. It’s just across Highway 246 from Mail Road. In 2012, he bought a $7 million home on Knapp Drive in Montecito.

Text: De Friel had just finished testifying before the supervisors when William “Bubba” Hines approached him. Hines denied grabbing or touching De Friel, but said he wanted to express his frustration that De Friel was growing 70 acres of cannabis next to the 22 acres of grapes he’s growing and the tasting room he hopes to build. The smell from the cannabis, Hines said, will adversely affect his wine operation. Hines denied being walked out by bailiffs. “I told them I was leaving anyway,” he said. Text: Wine-industry representatives contend that Santa Barbara County is unique in allowing cannabis operators to “stack” multiple small licenses — each for 10,000 square feet — in order to create much more sizable operations. Such big “grows,” they contend, are creating serious odor problems for the tasting rooms, where 78 percent of all wine is reportedly sold. Hines charged cannabis operators were exploiting a loophole in state law to create the biggest concentration of cannabis grown in the state. Bozanich agreed there’s more “stacking” in Santa Barbara than anywhere else.

Majakanvartijan uni by Ville Leinonen. Really liked this. He seems a contemporary of the Finnish freak folk stuff (albums on Fonal even!) but this is like lush, off-kilter singer-songwriter...v good.
