not the point of this worthwhile article, but - is KLA Tencor's signage at Levi's Stadium really that much bigger than, well, Levi's? that field better be smooth and divot-free.

too few opportunities for surface profilometry jokes on this platform.

Conservatives are going to hate Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show — and that’s a good thing
The world’s biggest annual sporting event will feature one of the world’s biggest musical acts. That’s how it should be.

they're pretty snarky ab/ all the reasons that this document *has* to be a forgery, tho:
"Majestic 12 or 'MJ-12' Reference Report" section at link provided in the previous skeet.

my fave Ike Library anecdote: they get lots of visits from people trying to prove Ike met w/ aliens. at some point, one such visitor secretly inserted a memo ab/ such a meeting into a box, which the archivists now can't remove b/c, well, archivists...

Zuckerman more lukewarm in reply. I think this must be the conference referred to in the Guardian obituary where he dismissed her findings as "anecdote"

www.theguardian.com/science/2025...
Zuckerman to Huxley: "I have never met Miss Goodall but I look forward to doing so on th emorning of April 12th when I believe I shall be in the Chair."

Jane Goodall, whose impressive qualities were evident even to the not-easy-to-impress (here Julian Huxley) right from the very first:
1962 letter from Julian Huxley to Solly Zuckerman describing Jane Goodall as "this extraordinary young woman."

How did #computers go from niche machines to everywhere, all at once? It turns out one of the oldest technologies, #books, was key.

Join our MUSTS colloquium by @patrickmccray.bsky.social on Wednesday 8 October in which we will explore how literature shaped the rise of computing.

is this warrior ethos? how about the personal grooming - up to standard?

normally with this genre of art my sympathies are with the kitty cat but just for today I'll root for the Amazon.

there's also this claim (bottom of 👇) that the '73-'74 oil shock was the proximate cause of heightened restrictions on immigration to Belgium. is that supported in the literature? true of other Western European countries? maybe you know, @blenormand.bsky.social ?

what's that you say - is there a connection to oil? why yes, yes there is! Red Star was founded by Philadelphia oil brokers who were shipping oil to Antwerp to sell on the European market & wanted to make money on the return leg as well.

visited the Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp on the weekend. the siteis where a couple million people departed for new lives in North America but the museum is ab/ both their story (e.g., Irving Berlin's) & migration/moving humans more generally. if you're in Antwerp, highly recommend.

for the next 12 months I'll be the product of two primes. but then after that I will - as I have for the past year - be far more accurately rendered as the product of a square and a prime.

"ton" also means 100,000 of something (usually money) in Dutch - and now wikipedia informs me that it means 100 of something (anything?) in UK English! is that really true? imagine the arbitrage possibilities...

I won't miss Gregg Wallace on Master Chef, but there was a certain car-crashy thrill to waiting for him to say things like "I'd like to stick my pork in your sauce" every episode.

the jokes on all of us, of course - every time there's one of these predicted raptures, a few thousand penguin souls ascend to heaven & none of the left behind humans even notice
