Preserving the hardware and spirit of America's ventures into space. Page administered by the U.S. Space Force Historical Foundation, Inc.
65 years ago today (25 Jan 1961), the U.S. Air Force selected the Titan II booster for the X-20 Dyna-Soar spaceplane. The reusable glider concept never flew, but its ideas shaped lifting bodies, reentry, and future winged spacecraft.

65 years ago today (23 Jan 1961), Atlas 90D launched from Launch Complex 12, completing Atlas D flight testing. The 55th Atlas launch helped turn America’s first ICBM into a legendary space booster. Here are some Atlas D highlights from our archives.

20 years ago today, NASA’s New Horizons launched from Cape Canaveral aboard an Atlas V.

In 2015, it delivered humanity’s first close-up images of Pluto and kept going into the Kuiper Belt.

From the Cape to the edge of the solar system. 🚀

Happy Appreciate a Dragon Day! 🐉🚀

Today we salute SpaceX Crew Dragon Endeavour. Since 2020 it’s flown Demo-2, Crew-2, Ax-1, Crew-6, Crew-8, and Crew-11, which carried Rupert the Space Armadillo into orbit. One hardworking dragon.

50 years ago today, Helios 2 launched from historic LC-41 atop a Titan IIIE. Built by NASA and Germany, it became the fastest spacecraft of its era and flew closer to the Sun than any probe until 2018. A bold Cape Canaveral milestone ☀️🚀

More on our newly acquired IFLOT from our reference collection. Dating to 1965, this optical tracking system supported launches at Cape Canaveral and KSC for decades. It’s a rare reminder that imagery, radar, and telemetry all worked together on launch day.

Why Cape Canaveral? Earth’s spin gives rockets a natural speed boost when launching SE over the Atlantic. That equatorial assist shaped missions from the first 1950 launches to today’s Space Force national security and exploration flights.

Happy National Pass Gas Day!
In the 1950s, America needed more “gas” to reach orbit. Chemist Mary Sherman Morgan invented Hydyne (originally nicknamed “Bagel”), the high-energy fuel that helped launch Explorer I from Launch Complex 26 in 1958. A little extra gas changed history. 🚀

Happy National Weigh-In Day!

DYK rockets were weighed at historic LC-26? Scales under the pad, with a readout in the blockhouse, tracked LOX boil-off during fueling. Those numbers helped secure America’s first bioflights and first satellite into orbit.
