Once equipped with this well-considered analysis, we will finally be able take a big leap forward to ensure our tenants stay housed and our communities remain stable.

This means it’s imperative on us as policymakers to figure out a permanent common sense formula that works for LA’s market – both tenants and landlords – to keep people housed and our economy thriving.

A plurality of the impacted units are owned by smaller landlords, and a large number of RSO tenants are long-term tenants…

My goal is to ensure that any recommendations this Committee makes are done so with a thorough understanding of what our current framework is and the different pieces that make up our policy.

Last week in Housing & Homelessness Committee, we began discussions to revise the methodology used to update the annual allowable rent increase for protected units under the Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO), paving the way for an updated rent control formula.

The Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance (LARSO), which regulates how much rents can go up for nearly 75% of the City’s rental stock every year.

While we’ve taken considerable action to protect tenants, passing some of the strongest tenant protections since the Rent Stabilization Ordinance went into effect nearly 40 years ago, it’s fair to say that Los Angeles has changed dramatically in that time. What hasn’t?

Thank you to everyone who joined us and stopped by our booth— especially all the folks dressed up in western themed outfits, we loved your cowboy hats and boots! We hope to see you all next Saturday for Latin Hits at VNSO!

Multiple live bands performed as folks traversed the many organizations tabling and providing free resources. We were excited to connect with so many of you and share information about upcoming events—including our free Concerts In The Park on October 12 and 26 at VNSO (3-6PM!)

Families from across the city joined for an afternoon of activities, painting, bounce houses, and live music. There were also food trucks, a vintage car show, and a FERRIS WHEEL!

The Autry— one of Griffith Park’s crown jewels— hosted their 37th Annual Block Party honoring first responders and their dedicated efforts during the January wildfires.

The community came together at the Autry Museum for a day of fun, cultural education, and a good old fashioned line dancing demonstration!

As the STAP program continues to build, my office is committed to helping improve the program as needed to continue developing high-quality street furniture for Angelenos!

And, thanks to our advocacy in City Hall and the work of our partners at BSS and METRO, STAP is working to bring 3,000 shelters to streets near you, profoundly changing the experience of taking public transit in the City of Los Angeles.

With temperatures rising every summer, bus shelters are critical infrastructure for Los Angeles.

The new STAP shelters provide the shade, lighting, seating, and information that transit riders need to be safe and comfortable.

Over 150 new bus shelters have been installed across the city thanks to the STAP Program, including the newest shelter installed just today outside City Hall!

Humanitarian Day is one of the nation’s largest Muslim-led charity efforts during the Holy Month of Ramadan that provides food and supplies to the unhoused. Through this and his other leadership roles, he notably inspired younger generations to step into their power and purpose.

Over the years, Umar was a noteworthy champion for criminal justice reform, immigrant rights, interfaith dialogue, and affordable housing. Among his many lasting legacies, Umar was the catalyst behind Humanitarian Day.

In a single day, you could find him hosting an interfaith breakfast in the morning, handing out meals on Skid Row at lunch, delivering a sermon in the afternoon, and marching against oppression by night.
cd4losangeles.bsky.social
He built bridges across divides, and frequently collaborated with faith leaders from different backgrounds seeking his guidance, calm temperament, and advice. In moments of deep pain across our communities, he reminded us of our shared humanity and collective liberation.

Umar was a tireless force for social justice in Los Angeles and beyond for more than two decades. A proud native of Compton, he was a fixture in City Hall who fought the good fight to advance freedom, justice, and healing for all, especially the most vulnerable.

Today, we adjourned council in memory of Umar Hakim-Dey– a deeply loved and revered inter-faith community leader.
