been hungry for this number for a bit 😈

now to do precisely 2/3 of one more book, getting me exactly 2/3 of the way to the peak of Mt. 1000.
the climb goes ever on!
a cropped section of an excel sheet listing translated books by publisher (publisher names are censored). Total Japanese books translated is 666, circled in red. Total English releases is 600.5; the discrepancy of 65.5 is because of books that were done in English as omnibuses.

the 1999-2006 book series for children obviously wasn't an allegory for what's happening now
but revisiting as an adult, the VFD come off as basic liberals (lofty ideals, zero follow through) who refuse to throw a punch as the bad guys literally murder them and start fires and exploit mob psychology
cdcubed.bsky.social
-unrepentantly evil charlatan whips up credulous bloodthirsty populist mobs everywhere
-as villains burn it all down, primary opposition is a passive/ineffectual org
-young people realize the authorities/courts will not save them

good thing A Series of Unfortunate Events is fiction
(just rewatched)

there will be next time 😈

Oji gives a whiff of devil-may-care
whereas
Maori got that kansaiben twang

worlds apart!!
Oji says "All right." Maori says "All righty."

when the author thinks my stance re: "English does not tolerate repetition" is a bluff and not a boulder of a principle that I've chained myself to and that will drag me off a cliff

go ahead make all 95 characters say 了解 in a row, see if I blink
a World Trigger panel with five characters saying:
Sure, why not?
No complaints here.
All righty.
A solid choice.
Agreed. two more World Trigger panels, with nine more variations on 了解:
Roger that.
Sure thing.
All right.
Got it.
Of course.
Will do!
No problem.
Orders received.
Sounds good.

of course, the amateur mistake would be to equate alien syntax (to us) with the author intending characters to sound like aliens. but no! it says nothing about characterization. purposely shackling the sentence's chunks to those same speech bubbles in target lang. would be a misleading TL artifact
cdcubed.bsky.social
average JPN speaker would be like
"what's not to understand?"
concept art from Arrival, showing the aliens' byzantine mode of communication via temporal 4D ink blot circles or whatever the fuck

i may need treatment after receiving a near lethal dose of

verb-modifiers-object-subject
syntax
a yowa peda panel with the following text (very literally):
-will be waiting
-at Inter-High on our bikes
-for that moment, I!!

"Heh, shutdown is the noun, not the verb," I scoff as I'm dragged to the camps

there's also this fun spot where Sakamoto abandons his photorealistic art style for a single panel to do cartoony caricatures of Jack the Ripper suspects.
the Scotland Yard sketch artist seems to be Naoki Urasawa!
a manga panel showing a man looking at a wall of colorful suspects, most of them with big honkin' Urasawa noses.
The text reads as follows:

Text:	In the immediate wake of these shocking events, speculation abounded.
Text:	Over 100 persons of interest were put forward, including a barber, a butcher, and a quack doctor…
Text:	…but no arrests were made. The killer’s identity remains shrouded in mystery to this day, inspiring fear among the city’s denizens…

thank you Rare and Banjo Tooie for teaching me at age 11 that "punter" is a Britishism for customer (also, as in a "John," w.r.t. prostitutes).

also found a pleasing solution to the grim 腸が煮えくり返る->腹は裂かれて joke, swapping the pun element from the stomach to the hacking

(cw/tw: nudity, gore)
Mary Jane Kelly, the fifth of Jack the Ripper's canonical five, speaks to Joe Suwa through a painting:

Kelly:	An unlucky night, it was.
Kelly:	A punter had just left, and I was plumb knackered. That’s when he got me good.
Kelly:	Never even saw his face…
Kelly:	Can you blame me for feeling hacked off?
Kelly:	Well, I s'pose my guts were hacked open…
Kelly:	…and all stuffed with fish and potatoes… Ha ha…
a screenshot from Banjo Tooie. Big Al, who runs the hamburger stand in Witchworld, says:

"I'll just pop it back on the grill, and the punters will never know."

the contents of volume 5 of DRCL are up for ~free(ish) if you're subbed to the SJ app

this book covers the arc where Joe Suwa is convinced Dracula is Jack the Ripper, and he unleashes his steampunk clockwork Renfield sex doll made in the image of Luke/Lucy Westenra

"I wish I had been a J>E translator in the 80s/90s"

✔️Would probably own a house
❌No internet, basic research grueling to impossible, must resort to school of Woolsey, let's say the sign says "The High Point of Your Day"

signage text too tiny to read?
just gotta look up the irl location easy peasy
a page from Yowamushi Pedal, in a scene set on Shibu Toge Ridge Zoomed-in manga panel showing a stone monument with tiny, mostly illegible text a photo of the irl location, with clearly legible writing on the stone thing, marking the highest elevation that any National Route in Japan goes (2171m)

took a walk down the street where I live;
Portland signage is on the pulse, as always
a pair of pro immigration/anti-ICE posters in a shop window an ad for a Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark-themed burlesque show called Scary Stories to Tell after Dark, featuring a topless ghoul woman in the style of those old illustrations, and a red border to evoke Scholastic book printing an ad for a Costco-themed burlesque show called Costc-Ho. Hot dogs and food samples will be available
cdcubed.bsky.social
maybe not? lol
seems like a problem for tomorrow me

award for most upsetting bit of handwriting in this book has got to go to this
迫ってきてる

indecipherability: 4/10
wonk factor: 9/10
a panel with handwritten text that says
 迫
っ
て
き
て
る my rendition of that piece of text, in MS Paint

dude's always getting stopped on the road by fans

new bucket list item: intercept Wataru Watanabe during his annual summer cycling journey to Kyushu, tell him I translate his work, get drawn as a stick figure in volume 137 or whatever, translate the anecdote about him encountering me
a manga panel showing fans accosting the author on the road and badgering him for autographs. He is good-natured about all this.

needed to take a photo in order to read this one (smartphone is tax writeoff now?)

says "Tour de Summer Vacay 2018 Goal"
One of the pages in question, with a quarter placed under a very small piece of text Tiny text, quarter for scale

me at the end of every Yowamushi Pedal volume
the final two pages of Yowamushi Pedal volume 59—a bloodcurdling hodgepodge of tiny panels saturated with microscopic handwritten text, with all the design sense of a Japanese website or powerpoint Isildur, son of Elendil, holds the final two pages of Yowamushi Pedal volume 59 over the precipice within the secret chamber of Orodruin (Mt. Doom).
Elrond, son of Eärendil, says: "Translate the final few pages! Destroy them!"
Isildur says, "No."
