The Essex House and the Hotel New Yorker have nearly identical balconies, too, IIRC. And I see they opened about a year apart.

Ooooh I never made it to the SFWA mill'n'swill here. By the time I started going (early to mid-1990s) they were at that hotel on Central Park South. The Essex House, I think? Where it was until they moved to the Society of Illustrators.

The renovated lobby is gorgeous, and I hear the function spaces are opulent. They appear to be upgrading the rooms floor by floor. We were in the not-yet-done section and it was perfectly nice, though.

The New Yorker, by contrast, has bell staff, a concierge desk, well-staffed security, and a 24 hour diner on the first floor (the legendary Tick Tock Diner, also newly renovated). I'll take that over new carpet and plumbing any day!
