Storms are dangerous and can pose a serious risk. Do not go to the coast or travel whilst weather warnings are in place! Hazardous conditions can persist after a storm event, if you participate in recording efforts you are doing so at your own risk. Stay Safe everyone

Submit your records to our Storm Watch submission page: www2.habitas.org.uk/records/stor...

Storm Amy is fast approaching, with an Amber warning for wind now in place for parts of Northern Ireland.
If you find yourself on the coast in the aftermath of Storm Amy, you might find species, normally found deep below the waves, washed up on the shore.

🔬 Next month, Sarah Woodfin will begin a 3-year PhD studentship, funded by Department for Economy (DfE), match-funded by CEDaR, National Museums NI, on the status of the endemic Irish hare (Lepus timidus hibernicus). This research will focus on genomics, morphology and conservation assessment.
cedar-ni.bsky.social
🌾 Hares flatten vegetation into “forms” which provide shelter and allow them to easily scan for threats. Grasses provide camouflage and food.

🥊 In spring (mating season) you may see large groups jumping and boxing to compete for mates. Females may have 1-3 litters of up to 4 leverets per year!

Species of the month: Irish hare

⛰️A subspecies of the mountain hare that is endemic to Ireland, not to be mistaken with the invasive brown hare!

🌙 They have brown fur and a white underbelly, larger than rabbits at 52-62cm with black-tipped ears. They are generally nocturnal.

Recently we met with the amazing @Conservation Detection Dogs NI at the @Ulster Folk Museum.
We got to see how these conservation heroes use their noses to sniff out species, often tricky for humans.
From birds,🦇,rare plants and sensitive species these dogs are making a paws-itive impact.
