When I got married, I set one boundary: he could speak, but it had to be written and planned. Day of the wedding, my brother gives a great toast and hands the mic to my dad. I’m not paying much attention, just doting on my brand new wife.

He declined the help, got drunk, and delivered a long, rambling, deeply embarrassing speech for my brother and sister-in-law. A real highlight of the night for them.

At my brother’s wedding, my dad decided to wing his speech. I had offered to help write it. Only mentioned because: I’d only recently stopped being a national-championship-caliber collegiate speaker and speechwriter.
